Here are a few scenarios in which a lien /name will need to be added to a title: 

  • After a name change, you will have to add your new name to the car’s title. 
  • When gifting your car to a family member or friend
  • If you take out a loan on your vehicle (a car title loan from a financial institution, an auto loan, finance a car from a dealership or a private lender, or are leasing a vehicle) 
  • If you refinance and exiting a loan on your vehicle, you will need to add the new lienholder’s name to the car’s title, after removing the previous lender. 

When Will I Need to be Removing a Lien on a Car’s Title?

  • Once a loan on your vehicle is paid back, you can remove a lien on your car’s title. Your lender should provide a lien release, and you should be able to get a new or duplicate title.
